Folk Art Villages!

Folk art towns were probably my students favorite project, aside from the hands drawings they did earlier this year.  They just love using tempera paint, and who doesn't love drawing simplified, creative towns? These projects were a huge hit!

First we looked at some folk art pictures and drew inspiration from these images.  Then we began to draw our own.  The kids were required to use a simplified style, flat shapes, add lots of design, and create a well balanced work of art. For the paints, they were required to demonstrate appropriate control, spread with water and blot for small areas, and mix color directly on the project. When all was said and done, they outlined in either sharpie, color marker, or paint.  Well done fifth graders!
